What is Ethereum ?
Ethereum is the first and leading smart contract and dapp developing platform with thousands of applications and network protocols already built and run on it. Since the protocol is still based on proof-of-work, the transaction rate and scalability of the network is limited, what results in slow and quite expensive transactions. For big network applications with the need of high scalability and speed, Ethereum is no longer a supportive choice.
But in the meantime many side chain, second layer and off chain protocols have been developed on Ethereum, which helped to make the blockchain platform ready for future eco systems like the world of defi (decentralized finance).
The Ethereum blockchain is in the process of major changes in the protocol to become Ethereum 2.0 with proof-of-stake consensus algorithm and staking rewards, higher scalability and better speed. The launch of the new blockchain is expected to be done in the second half of 2020.
The token generated on the Ethereum platform have special standards, known as e.g. ERC20, ERC223 or ERC721 (non-fungible).
